Guideline for foreign students wishing to study at UFBA (F.A.Q)

 

Question 1:
How can a foreign student study at UFBA?

Reply:
Two categories of foreign students are allowed to study at UFBA:
a) Special Students – Any person currently enrolled in a university course or anyone who has already graduated from university.
b) Cooperative Agreement Students – Students who study at universities that have signed an agreement of cooperation with UFBA.

 

Question 2:
For how long may a foreign student study at UFBA?

Reply:
Special Students (depending on their individual academic performance) may remain at UFBA for 1-3 semesters. Cooperative Agreement Students may remain for 1-2 semesters.

 

Question 3:
In how many subjects may a foreign student enroll at UFBA per semester?

Reply:
Special Students: 1- 4 subjects.
Cooperative Agreement Students: No limits.

 

Question 4:
What university charges does the foreign student have to pay at UFBA?

Reply:
Special Student: Enrollment fee (R$20 – approximately equivalent to US$7) per semester.
Cooperative Agreement Student: No charges.

 

Question 5:
What documentation do foreign students need to present to be able to study at UFBA?

Reply:
Special Student:
· Enrollment request and a letter introducing him/her personally and academically. If approved, the student will receive an acceptance letter by mail.
· A letter from his/her home university confirming that he/she is a regular student.
· If the student has already graduated, a copy of the university diploma.
· Copy of student card.
· A doctor’s statement, notarized by the Brazilian Consulate in the student’s country of origin, testifying that the student suffers from no physical or mental illnesses.
· Passport and student visa issued by the Brazilian diplomatic service in the student's country of origin.
· Copy of a health insurance policy in the student’s name, valid for use in Brazil.
· One standard, passport sized photograph.

Cooperative Agreement Student:
· Enrollment request and a letter introducing him/her personally and academically. If approved, the student will receive an acceptance letter by mail.
· Enrollment request from the university with which UFBA has agreement of cooperation.
· Copy of student card.
· A doctor’s statement, notarized by the Brazilian Consulate in the student’s country of origin, testifying that the student suffers from no physical or mental illnesses.
· Copy of a health insurance policy in the student’s name, valid for use in Brazil.
· Passport and student visa issued by the Brazilian diplomatic service in the student’s country of origin.
· One standard, passport sized photograph.

 

Question 6:
Will the foreign student be permitted to use UFBA’s libraries?

Reply:
Yes, he/she will be allowed to carry out research in all the libraries pertaining to UFBA.

 

Question 7:
Where is the Federal University of Bahia situated?

Reply:
UFBA is situated in the center of the city of Salvador. It is divided into three campi, the Canela Campus, Ondina Campus and Federação Campus.

 

Question 8:
How can a foreign student obtain accommodation in Salvador?

Reply:
UFBA does not have its own private accommodation for foreign students. However, the following options are available:
· The private homes of families registered with UFBA’s International Affairs Office
· Apartments for rent
· Hostels

 

Question 9:
Are there restaurants at the university that can be used by foreign students?

Reply:
No. However, food in Brazil is not expensive. There are various inexpensive restaurants both on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods.
